Hello May Day!!!

May Day was celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The basket giver would ring the bell and run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the fleeing giver. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.
My mother was part Pennsylvania Dutch and she had some strange stories and beliefs. She told me once what she and her sister Dorothy had done on May Day every year. They would get up early in the morning right after sunrise. They wouldn't speak to each other and walk down the stairs and outside backwards. They would kneel in the dew covered grass and rub the dew on their face and pat their backs with it. Now what this was suppose to do is take the freckles off your face and place them somewhere else....where ever you patted. She also had a song they sang but I really don't remember it. Now this might seem strange but this is true....she didn't have any freckles on her face but her back and shoulders were covered with them. Interesting huh? Does anyone else have any stories about May Day? Sure would love to hear them.

GOS Contest #6 Entry

They are up to Contest #6 and this is what I have done with the design this time. My hubby is really good at woodwork and he's so nice to make me my hornbooks in just about any shape I can come up with. This time I thought an arch shape would be nice for this design after I added the quaker design at the top of it. This one was stitched on mushroom 28ct. evenweave using HDF silks....and this one is name "Chocolate Covered Cherries". Yum yum yum. What is it with me that I am always buying these flosses that are named after food. LOL
The spoon in the foreground was also made by
hubby for me. It's called a Sweetheart Spoon and it's a celtic tradition to present one to your sweetheart....hence the name.
Since it's friday, I want to wish everyone a good weekend and I hope you are able to get some stitching in. We all need a little therapy now and then and mine is stitching.

Apples and Wine.......

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren't as good but easy. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, the are amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one that is brave enough to climb to the top of the tree.

Now men,,,,, men are like a fine wine. They start out as grapes, and it's up to women to stomp the stuffing out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

My First Free Pattern

I have always wanted to start designing and this one is the first I have posted on here. I have it transferred to a PDF file but I have no idea how to post the pattern on my blog. If anyone can help, please contact me. This has been stitched on an olive green evenweave with DMC floss in several different stitches. I have it patterned that you can do this in one color or pick several colors you like. Around the outside there is twisted braid which was attached with the matching straight pins and then tied into a bow. The bottom of the pincushion is a matching pink cotton fabric or you can do another piece out of the same linen with just the outside backstitching and finish it the way you would a biscornu. The button in the center is a covered button with the same fabric as the bottom.
So please, if you can help me post the PDF file, contact me. I think I have come up with a temporary solution of posting this pattern. Here is a link to a server who has made the pattern into a pdf document and you are able to print from there. Please bear with me while I learn all these things any normal person knows how to do. LOL

I love finding new designers and this one is a gem. Miss Kat is a french designer who has some very beautiful designs and I hope to stitch them all.....eventually. This one I stitched on a hand dyed green 28ct. evenweave using a overdyed silk called Waterlillies from Caron. The sweet thing is filled with rice combined with lavender to make it into a cute little sachet. I have placed this item in my Finished Items for Sale folder.

A Finish, A Giveaway and A Movie

First off I have another finish that I just love. This design by La D Da was a really fun stitch and it worked up really fast. It's stitched on 36ct. Days Gone By linen using HDF silks by Vikki Hastings. I finished it like the directions with a little bit of a twist. On the back I blanket stitched a heart on a pocket that has a touch of creamlace at the top. This will make a great way to carry my Blackberry and maybe slip a little money in the back pocket.
Next is about my next giveaway. I have started the stitching and hopefully will have the prize finished by saturday. I will tell you this....the colors are white fabric with stitching in a medium green and a medium peach. Tantalizing isnt it? Well you'll just have to wait a few days.
Thirdly is about a movie I just watched. My husband and I are great fans of the director James Cameron and we have been waiting patiently for his movie Avatar to be released on dvd. My hubby can't go to movies because of his deafness so we wait patiently for their release. I wish I could describe the colors in this film. The entire movie, I was sitting here trying to match the colors with DMC floss. LOL I know I am either going to design something or else take an existing design and try to duplicate the colors. I wish I had seen this movie on the big screen to get a better look at them. If you haven't seen this movie, it is well worth it just for the photography. Let me know what you think about it if you have seen it.
That's all for now. I will keep you posted on the giveaway so stay tuned.

Just Some Thoughts

I came across this picture and it got me thinking. Friends. Why do we have to surround ourselves with people and why are they so important to us. I've never been one to have alot of friends...mostly because I felt I really didn't need them. When you open yourself to someone you call a friend, you are also opening yourself to hurt. I've been hurt so many times by friends I couldn't begin to count them. I left my guard down and it's happening again.
I was talking with my daughter Jenn this morning and we were discussing this same subject. Her and I are so much alike it's crazy. She is exactly like me in not having many friends and probably for the same reason as me....I'm tired of being hurt.
Maybe I'm crazy for thinking this way, I don't know but I do know it stops now. If I have to become a hermit to stop this type of hurt, so be it. I can not deal with these types of people anymore. Let me know your thoughts on this and if you feel the same way or completely different.

A Happy Dance Finish

Well with hubby at work today, I was able to finish this Just Nan Winder Holder. If you are familiar with the pattern, Nan had a flap that opened up and it had a piece of wool for your needles. Well I figured I had enough needle holders and I wanted a pinkeep. When I did my finishing, I took away the flap and added white straight pins. I just love the new thread holders she came out with and this was a fun stitch....I think. LOL
Just a word of credit....my daughter Jenn knitted the beautiful blue doily for me. Have I told you she is an awesome knitter? Well she is and I will post a picture of a shawl her knitted for me tomorrow.

Slow Going

I'm still plucking away on the JN Butterfly Holder but it's been slow going on this one. Have you ever noticed that you can't get as much stitching done when hubby is in the house? Well mine had a 3 day weekend this week and it's put me behind schedule.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I feel so bad for the people in Europe who are feeling the effects of the volcanic ash cloud. I can't imagine having to breath that air all the time....and all the people stranded here in the US because the airlines aren't flying over there. I wonder how this is going to effect everyone this coming week.
The weather has been really nice here in Orlando but I hope we get some rain soon....my flowers could use a good wetting. I don't know about you but I love visiting other blogs to see what pics of flowers they have posted. It makes me kind of homesick when I see some flowers we can't plant here because of the heat.
Here's wishing all of you a blessed Sunday.

Beginning a New Project

This morning I have started a new project and this one is by Just Nan. I'm stitching this on 28ct. white evenweave and instead of using DMC floss, I changed the fibers to HDF silks from Vikki Hastings. I purchased the butterfly thread winder so you know I had to do this case to hold it. LOL Isn't it nice how we stitchers make up excuses to validate our spending....at least I do. The picture below is how (hopefully) it will turn out. I hope Nan doesn't mind me borrowing her picture...it's so pretty.

A Danybrod finish

I love this ladies designs. If you have never looked at her blog....http://dany88.canalblog.com/ take the time....it's well worth it. This one was stitched using HDF silks by Vikki Hastings on 32ct. cream Belfast linen. There are two pages of wool to hold your different size needles and a pocket in the middle to hold scissors.
This is the third design of hers I have stitched and I have several more so stay tuned.

My Concern For A Friend

Good Tuesday morning to you all.
Today I start out with a great deal of hope that my dearest friend is going to have a good day today. I won't mention her name because she has a right to her privacy but as she reads this, she will know I'm talking about her. She had a very great loss last year and she still has not come to grips with it and it is destroying any life she had. I feel for her loss because I have gone thru it too and all I can say to her is it will get better. Aren't they very simple words for measuring how she feels. "It will get better". Who is to say that this actually will happen and who are we to even suggest such a thing? This sweet lady has me very worried and I pray for her every night. She knows she has a great family who supports her all the time but for some reason, this is not enough to stop her pain.
I have posted the above pictures in hopes that as the cherry blossoms always come out in all their glory in the spring...she too will find hope that her life will come back to normal and that she will enjoy it again. Love ya lady!!

Primitive Strawberry Ornament/Pincushion

From Nicoletta Farrauto comes this sweet little strawberry pincushion. The colors that she used for the design are just beautiful and it was definitely a fun stitch. I stitched mine in NPI silks and I used Weeks Dye Works herringbone wool for the leaves. Of course I had to add one of my bows to it and it was made from a cotton fabric with torn edges to complement the primitive look.
Hope every one is having a fun monday and doing something you love to do.

French Heart Tin Finish

This JBW design was just asking to be placed on this heart tin don't ya know. My daughter, Jenn, knows how I like frou frou french and bought me the high heel for my birthday. I love it....it is so shabby chic with a french touch. Also the stitching was done with a HDF silk called....are you ready for this.....Chocolate Covered Cherries. Don't ya love it!!!
Well it's on to the next project which is a primitive design and I will post that in a few days. Everyone have a Blessed Sunday.

Some of my flowers

Here it is noon on a saturday and all the yard work is finished. I thought I'd show you some of the flowers that are around our front porch. The above is a climbing jasmine and oh it smells wonderful coming up the walk. It is really loaded with blooms and buds this year so we'll be able to enjoy this fragrance for quite awhile.
The above is a new color of petunia that Home Depot had in. I just couldn't resist because I knew how beautiful it would be hanging from the porch roof. This pot is huge and I'm hoping they last for quite awhile. I love the color and it brightens up the front of the house nicely.

The above is bouganvillea in a stunning shade of pink. These are becoming one of my favorite flowers to decorate with. I have 3 different colors....dark rose, pink/white and these pink ones.
I don't have the greenest thumb on the block and I've had some disasters in my flower beds like the time I had rose bushes all along our side fence. They were stunning until the 3 hurricanes of 2004 that hit us in 2 weeks. After that they were horrible looking. Someone told me it was because of the rain that comes with these type of storms have a lot of salt in them and the roses couldn't handle it. I only have one bush left which is up front beside the garage door and it hasn't come back fully yet and it's been 6 years. I keep hoping because it's a beautiful English rose that I sent for and just fell in love with. I think that's why I'm not in any hurry to dig it out. Hope springs eternal....or so they say.
Have a wonderful weekend!!

Hey Jenn....I finally finished it!!!

This beautiful stitched lady with the letter B was designed and stitched by my very talented daughter, Jenn. Believe it or not, it is stitched with 1 thread over 1 on 40ct. linen. I have no idea how she does that and I'm very envious. I finally got around to finishing it into my sewing case that I have wanted to do for several years....yes I said years. When it comes to making things for myself, I have a hard time doing it but when it's for someone else, I love the entire process.
That is one thing I guess I'll have to take lessons in.

How Many Is Too Many?

Sitting here thinking about all the designs I want to have finished in the next few months and I'm beginning to feel over whelmed. I know stitchers who have up to 20 designs started and working on. I get frazzled if I work on more than two at one time and I just don't see how these ladies do it. How do they keep their place? How do they keep their interest? I am stumped. Maybe it's from my years of selling my finished items. No money came in until that item was finished and on ebay. I'm just wondering which one is the best method? What do you ladies think? Am I short changing myself by only working on one or two designs at a time? I would really love to hear your feedback.

Blackbird Design Pincushion

This is my latest finish from Blackbird Designs. As you see, I had to change it again into my own idea to make it "mine". I stitched it with HDF silks from Vikki Hastings on 28ct. Ancient Cashel Linen. I added the tiny ruffle around the edge and the little ruffle around the button in the middle. I felt horrible that I couldn't add one of my bows but the design just was too busy for one.
I love doing Blackbird designs and this one will make a great addition to my collection. One thing I forgot to mention is what it's filled with.....rice with dried lavender so it has a beautiful smell to it.

My Dream House

Either one....I'm not picky. I would love to have mine sitting in the middle of about 5 acres on a little hill with trees and flowers all around it. I love houses that have little hide and seek areas....you know the kind....where you can sit on a window seat, reading a good book and have nothing but peace and quiet all around you.
Am I asking too much? Think I'll get my wish?
Well if you don't have a dream....how will you know when it comes true.

What Do You Mean There's A Chocolate Day???

Can you actually make a whole day dedicated to chocolate?? Well there are actually quite a few days that let you celebrate chocolate. There is Chocolate Day on July 7th and National Chocolate Day on October 28th. There is also World Chocolate Day on September 4th. So you have a least three wonderful days to indulge. Take your time. Eat slowly and as much as you like. Just blame it on the day

Do you think that "white" chocolate is really chocolate? Well I don't. To me it has to be dark, a rich color of brown, have that lovely smell we all can recognize with a blindfold on.

Do you think 3 days are enough? I don't.....*and she's gone to find her stash of chocolate*.....

I Love Redwork

I've done quite a few of biscornus, but I've never stitched a redwork one....so here it is. This was a pattern out of the GOS magazine and of course I added the bow. It's not my favorite thing to do but at least now I can say I did it. Let me know if you have done any redwork and if you enjoyed stitching it.

Winner of my Giveaway....

....Lynda. She has been notified and will receive her prize very shortly. Thank you all for entering and stay tuned for more giveaways. My next one will be at the end of May for Memorials Day.

Two New Starts

For those of you who know about the contest that Martina Dey is having, these are my colors. I've decided on HDF fabric and threads. My color scheme is different shades of blue and burgandys. As you can see I have started it and so far it's alot of fun to stitch. I'm planning on doing different stitches and using the silks in interesting ways. I will keep you abreast of my progress as I go.

This is the Chatelaine kit for Indian Summer Reflections that my daughter wants stitched. The pattern has intimidated her so she asked me to do it for her and she's stitching Mirabilia Sabrina for me. This one is done on 32ct Magnolia with all the silks you could possibly want to work with. This one is a biggy and I'm sure will take me several months to complete. I will also show you my progress on this one too.
Wish me luck because I'm surely going to need it.

Prayers Needed Please

I am asking for a friend of mine who's 90 year old mother is in the hospital and they just discovered she has lung cancer. Please add her to your prayer list and say a little one for her.

Happy Easter

I think of the garden after the rain;
And hope to my heart comes singing
At morn the cherry-blooms will be white,
And the Easter bells be ringing!

Don't Get Fooled Today

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is an illegal holiday celebrated in various countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible.
Some famous pranks:
Spaghetti trees: The BBC television programme Panorama ran a famous hoax in 1957, showing Italians harvesting spaghetti from trees. They had claimed that the despised pest, the spaghetti weevil, had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanting to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti trees. It was, in fact, filmed in St Albans.
Left Handed Whoppers: In 1998, Burger King ran an ad in USA Today, saying that people could get a Whopper for left-handed people whose condiments were designed to drip out of the right side. Not only did customers order the new burgers, but some specifically requested the "old", right-handed burger.
Smell-o-vision: In 1965, the BBC purported to conduct a trial of a new technology allowing the transmission of odor over the airwaves to all viewers. Many viewers reportedly contacted the BBC to report the trial's success.
So it looks like if you get caught today (which I know I will) we won't be alone.
